Business News

Hiring for talent

It seems clear to me from the articles I’ve seen and read on this topic that there is a big shift in what employers are seeking when hiring. Some call this trend hiring unconventional talent. What this means is the requirements needed for a job vs what is needed to do a job is changing or has changed. Instead of looking to hire a Software Engineer with a 4-year degree, to hire differently you may hire a self-taught hacker instead. Hiring managers would look for someone whose has proven themselves to be an out-of-the-box thinker and has also demonstrated they have some development experience.

This change is a positive trend for candidates who have taken a non-traditional route but have gained valuable skills and experience to get them where they are now. This can be beneficial to those businesses who lack diversity within their employee ranks as well as for companies who are vying for valuable talent in an extreme shortage of qualified workers.

It’s also key to note that though the rules may be leaning towards change the caveat remains that “a candidate must be able to do the job”. To remain viable to in the workforce these new workers must prove themselves to be continuous learners as well.

GOOD NEWS

69% of Companies Doing More Skills Building - Post Covid

In an effort to close the ever-widening skills-gap. Skill-building has become a huge focus for companies. This is due in part to changes that have arisen from the effects of Covid-19. The Pandemic has drastically changed how business operates today. The new business focus is on training and seeking employees with cognitive and soft skills says McKinsey & Co. Those who have social, emotional, interpersonal skills and empathy are in demand.

Basic digital skills too have arisen as an additional priority in non-technical companies. Engineering, technical design and maintenance skills are increasing in industrial and advanced industries. Business continues to adjust by redeploying employers, releasing workers, and by hiring full-time & contract workers to meet their skill-building needs.
